Clayton Barnes was new head coach K.C. Keeler’s first hire at Temple. He came with Keeler from Sam Houston State. Barnes will serve as general manager and will be entrusted with building and maintaining the roster through all aspects of player acquisition including scouting, recruiting, and player retention.
Barnes was given the title General Manager at SHSU after joining Keeler’s staff as the Director of Football Operations and Player Personnel in 2020. He spent the previous six years in various coaching roles throughout Texas and Georgia.
At Sam Houston he was in charge of evaluating potential recruits, and the management of the team's roster and scholarships. He also coordinated the day-to-day operations for the team, including planning team travel and meals, organizing and promoting camps and managing the student intern program.
Before returning to Sam Houston, he spent the 2019 season as an offensive graduate assistant coach at Georgia Southern, and prior to that spent two years at Texas State where he was the Director of Player Development/Graphic Design following a one-year stint as an offensive quality control coach for the Bobcats in 2016.
Barnes initially broke into the college ranks as an offensive intern at Sam Houston in 2015. He also was a volunteer assistant football coach at A&M Consolidated High School from 2013-15 while he was a student at Texas A&M.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management at Texas A&M in 2015.
