NORFOLK, Va. - The opportunity exists for the Temple women's basketball team to bring an end to an historic streak, that of the #1/1 Connecticut Huskies. The Owls (25-8) will face UConn (34-0) in the NCAA Second Round on Tuesday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN2. The Huskies are in the midst of a 73-game win streak, the longest Division I winning streak for any women's team in history.
UConn has won all 73 of those games by 10 points or more. The Huskies are averaging almost 82 points per game this season, while holding their opponents to an average of 46.5 ppg.
Eighth-seeded Temple is participating in its seventh-straight NCAA Tournament, and won its first round game for the first time since 2007 with a 65-53 victory over ninth-seeded James Madison.
As preparation for the next game continues for the Owls, the media spotlight has heightened. Second-year Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza spent 14 years as an assistant coach for UConn's Geno Auriemma before taking over the Owls' program in 2008. The storyline is set, and the former assistant will face her mentor on the opposite side for the first time.
The Owls have won 10 of their last 12 games, thanks in large part to their extremely stingy defense. Temple's opponents average just 54.9 points per game, which ranks 16th in the nation, and the Owls have held four of their last five opponents to 55 points or fewer.
