3.16.15 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- The 2014-15 Temple women's basketball season will continue in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Owls (16-16) will travel to Marist (21-11) on Thursday at 7 p.m. to play the Red Foxes in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The game will be broadcast by Marist on the Red Fox network, and fans can watch with a $5.95 subscription. Live stats will also be available.
Temple will be making its fifth appearance in the WNIT, and its first since the 2011-12 season. In their last post-season appearance, the Owls advanced to the WNIT third round in 2012, and have also finished fifth (1982) and seventh (1983) at the event.Â
The Owls ended the regular season with a 16-15 overall record, including a 12-6 mark in the American Athletic Conference. The team tied for third place overall, and nabbed the fourth seed at the conference tournament. Fifth-seeded ECU ended Temple's run at the American Tournament, handing the Owls a tough 77-71 loss, setting the team to 16-16 overall.
On the season, All-Conference and All-Freshman selection Alliya Butts leads the squad with 12.7 points per game and 66 total steals. Junior Erica Covile, also an All-Conference selection, contributes 11.5 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per outing, while also recording 56 steals and 18 blocks. Sophomore Feyonda Fitzgerald has come off the bench to average 10.8 points a contest, while dishing out 89 total assists.
Also for the Owls, freshman Tanya Atkinson averages 10.6 points and 6.9 boards per game, while senior Tyonna Williams is averaging 10.4 points per game and is leading the team with 103 total assists. Williams scored her 1,000th career-point in Temple's last contest and needs just one three pointer to tie the program's all-time career record currently held by Qwedia Wallace with 162.
As a team, Temple shoots 36.7% from the field and 32% from beyond-the-arc. The Owls finished the regular season with the American's top free throw percentage, connecting on 72.4% of all attempts from the line. Temple averages 66.2 points and 40.2 rebounds per game.
Marist earned the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) automatic bid to the WNIT, finishing their conference season 15-5. The Red Foxes advanced to the finals of the MAAC Tournament before falling to top-seeded Quinnipiac, 72-61.Â
Three players are responsible for the bulk of the scoring for Marist, with Tori Jarosz leading the pack. She averages 17.2 points and 9.5 boards per game from the post position, while blocking 70 total shots this season. Madeline Blais averaged 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds a game and also is a shot-blocking threat. Sydney Coffey rounds out the offense for the Red Foxes, averaging 12.6 points per game.
Marist averaged 63.7 points per game this season, while allowing opponents 59.1 a game. The Red Foxes shoot 40.4% from the field, 32.8% from three, and 75.6% from the free throw line. Marist is being out-rebounded by six boards per game, but have a positing turnover margin at 0.4.Â

Both teams fell to the Blue Hens early in the season, as Marist lost 70-60 on November 16, with Temple dropping its December 3 game, 69-58. Temple and Marist have met twice before, with the teams splitting the contests. Marist topped Temple, 53-41, on November 28 1999, while Temple defeated Marist, 77-57, on November 21, 2000.
