Women's Basketball Makes it Six in a Row; Owls Top Houston by 30

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team made it six in a row, downing visiting Houston 78-48 on Friday night at McGonigle Hall. The win lifts the Owls to 17-7 overall, 11-2 in The American, while the Cougars fall to 5-19, 1-12 in conference play.
The Owls had another buzzer-to-buzzer victory, as the stingy Temple defense allowed just 15 first half points, a season-best. Overall, Temple forced 23 turnovers from Houston, while racking up 12 steals.
Temple sophomores Tanaya Atkinson and Donnaizha Fountain both had career games in the lopsided victory. Atkinson finished with 27 points, topping her career mark, while adding seven rebounds and three steals. Fountain bested her career highs in two categories, recording 20 points and 15 rebounds, for her second career double-double. Elsewhere, sophomore Alliya Butts had 11 points and two steals, while junior Feyonda Fitzgerald had eight assists with four points and four steals. Rounding out the individual highlights, senior Erica Covile had six points and seven boards.
Temple exploded out of the gate, shooting 61.1% (11-18) in the first quarter, thanks in large part to a 7-for-7 performamnce from Atkinson. After a slim 5-4 lead, Temple used a 16-0 run to go up 21-4. Houston broke the drought with a three, but Temple closed the frame with a 5-2 advantage to lead 26-9 after one.
The Owls' tight defense held Houston scoreless for over seven minutes in the second frame, while Temple's offense built their lead to 36-9. The Cougars finally got points on the board with a pair of free throws at the 2:48 mark. Houston added four more points in the final two minutes of play, but Temple held a 36-15 lead at the break.
Atkinson out-scored Houston by herself in the first half, recording 17 total points, while Temple held the Cougars to just 15. Fountain had seven points and five rebounds in the first 20 minutes, while Fitzgerald had six first-half assists. Mariah Mitchell led the Cougars with five in the first frame.
A 15-6 run to start the third quarter put the Owls ahead by 30, at 54-24. The Temple lead ballooned to 35 points by the end of the frame, as a buzzer beater from Ruth Sherrill made it 61-26 after three.
Temple's lead grew to as many as 37 in the fourth quarter, and the Owls closed out the 30-point victory.
Jessieka Palmer led the Houston charge with 13 points, while Serithia Hawkins (10 pts) and Mariah Mitchell (8 pts) rounded out the Cougars' scoring.
Temple has little rest before entertaining No. 1 UConn on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at McGonigle Hall on ESPN2. The game is sold out to the general public, but a limited number of student tickets will be available the day of the game.
