Four from Women's Basketball Earn Big 5 Awards

PHILADELPHIA -- Four players from the Temple women's basketball team were honored with Philadelphia Big 5 Awards, as announced on Monday. The Owls' Alliya Butts was named to the All-Big 5 first team, Feyonda Fitzgerald and Tanaya Atkinson were selected as second-team All-Big 5, while Erica Covile was named the city series' top free throw shooter.
Butts earns All-Big recognition for the second-straight season. The sophomore guard leads the 22-11 Owls averaging 15.2 points per game. Butts leads the Owls with 2.42 steals per game, and her 80 total takeaways ranks her 36th in the nation in the category. She is second on the Owls in assists per game, averaging 2.9 per outing, and also chips in with 2.5 rebounds per game.
Fitzgerald returns to the All-Big 5 team after being honored as a freshman. The junior guard is second on the Owls in scoring, averaging 13.5 points per game. She leads Temple with 5.3 assists per game, and her 176 total this season is the second-best single season assist mark in program history. Fitzgerald was Temple's top scorer in four Big 5 games this season, racking up 16.8 points per game and 5.3 assists per game.
Atkinson earns her first All-Big 5 recognition this season. The sophomore guard contributes on both end of the floor, averaging 12.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Atkinson shoots 46% from the field, leading the Owls this season. In addition to her point and rebound numbers, she has racked up 43 total steals this season, and three double-doubles.
Covile was honored as the Big 5's top free throw shooter in the regular season, connecting on 87-of-98 attempts (88.8%). The senior guard also boosts Temple's offense this year, averaging 9.7 points per game, with a team-best 7.4 rebounds per outing. Earlier this season, Covile became just the fourth player in Owls history to record 1,000 points, 750 rebounds and 150 steals.
Temple is 22-11 this season and has advanced to the third round of the WNIT. The Owls will next host Ohio on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
The Big 5 banquet is Monday, April 11 beginning at 6:30 pm at the Palestra. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the door the night of the banquet. Along with the current season men's and women's award winners, five of the greatest men's basketball teams in Big 5 history will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
