Women's Basketball Falls to Rutgers

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team fell to visiting Rutgers, 84-67 on Monday night in non-conference action at McGonigle Hall. The Owls even their record to 1-1, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 2-0.
KEYS TO THE GAME
> Temple led early but Rutgers nailed five threes in the final four minutes of the second quarter to open up a 24-point advantage.
> Temple rallied to get the deficit to just seven points late in the third quarter, but Rutgers rebounded to close out the win.
> The Owls got a 30-point, 13-rebound effort from senior Tanaya Atkinson, but turned the ball over 23 times in the loss.
> Temple shot 40.7% from the field, but Rutgers scored 28 points off turnovers, accounting for the difference in the game.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Atkinson's career performance saw her go 13-of-17 from the field, adding three assists and two steals.
> The double-double was her second-straight and was the 16th of her career.
> Freshman Mia Davis was the only other Owl in double-figures, scoring 13 points and finishing with nine rebounds.
> Junior Deja Reynolds had a career high of six points in the loss.
> Freshman Breanna Perry finished with five points, while classmate Emani Mayo had four.
GAME NOTES
> Before tonight, the last Temple home loss over a non-ranked opponent was a 54-60 setback to Penn during the 2015-16 season.
> Temple turned the ball over 15 times in the first half, after recording just 13 turnovers in the season opener on Friday.

> Temple had the advantage early, going up 5-0 after an Atkinson three.
> The lead changed hands twice more before Rutgers caught fire from beyond the arc.
> The Scarlet Knights nailed threes on five of their final six possessions to open up a 24-13 lead after one.

SECOND QUARTER
> After Rutgers made it 26-13, Temple rallied to get it to 10 points on a lay-up from Atkinson.
> From there, Rutgers scored 14 unanswered points to make it 44-20 with under four to play in the half.
> The Scarlet Knights launched a full court press leading to eight turnovers in five minutes for Temple.
> The Owls went on a small run 5-1 run to close the quarter trailing 45-24.
THIRD QUARTER
> Atkinson scored the first six points of the third quarter, as the Owls opened with a 16-6 run to cut the lead to 51-44.
> The Owls continued the surge, getting the deficit to just seven points on a Perry bucket making it 55-48 with 2:06 left in the frame.
> Rutgers ended the quarter on an 11-2 run however, making it 66-50 after three.
FOURTH QUARTER
> Temple could get the lead no lower than 16 points, as Rutgers finished out the win.
