Women's Basketball Uses Third-Quarter Push to Beat Hampton, 65-56

PHILADELPHIA - With a dominant effort in the third quarter, Temple women's basketball was able to overcome a lackluster first half and grab a 65-56 win over visiting Hampton on Thursday night. The Owls (7-2) trailed by six at the break, but outscored the Pirates (2-6) 22-4 in the third quarter.
Keys to the Game
> Temple committed a season-high 35 turnovers, but also out-rebounded Hampton 50-26.
> The Owls played strong team basketball when things were clicking, getting assists on 19 of 24 baskets.
> With a 7-2 record, Temple is off to its best start since the 2009-10 season.
Individual Highlights
> Tanaya Atkinson added 10 rebounds to a game-high 25 points, notching her eighth double-double of the season and 22nd of her career.
> Temple's second-leading scorer was freshman Emani Mayo who scored a season-high 19 points while grabbing six boards and dishing four assists.
> Mia Davis added a season-high five assists to a game-high 14 rebounds.
First Quarter
> The Owls had an early 9-2 lead after three straight buckets for Atkinson in the first four minutes, but went cold from there.
> Hampton used a 16-0 run to take an 18-9 lead at 2:53, and Temple scored just three points in the final six minutes.
> Temple committed 12 turnovers in the first quarter alone, leading to a 17-5 lead for the Pirates in points off turnovers.
> The Owls trailed by their largest margin of 23-12 at the end of the quarter
Second Quarter
> Temple cut the deficit to five points early in the second quarter, but the Pirates responded with a 7-0 run for a 30-18 lead at 6:03.
> Still down 12 with 4:13 remaining, the Owls got another run going and scored eight straight to make it a four-point game, 32-28 with 1:10 to go.
> The final points of the half were free throws for Hampton, who took a 34-28 lead into the break.
Third Quarter
> The Owls looked like a new team coming out of halftime, promptly hitting six of their first nine attempts from the field to tie the game and take their first lead since early in the game.
> Temple's dominance continued the rest of the way, as the Owls did not allow Hampton to score in the final 7:16, outscored the Pirates 22-4 in the quarter and leading 50-38 after the 10-minute period.
> Hampton went just 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from the field while the Owls finished 9-of-15 (60 percent).
Fourth Quarter
> Temple scored the opening bucket for its largest lead of 14 points, 52-38.
> The Owls still led by 13 with 5:39 left, but Hampton made it a game the rest of the way.
> Over a two and a half minute stretch, the Pirates used an 11-2 run to cut their deficit to four, 60-56 at 1:58.
> Temple was unable to make a single field goal for over six minutes, but made enough free throws to hold off Hampton who also struggled from the floor.
