Women's Basketball Falls to Penn in Big 5 Action

PHILADELPHIA -- Visiting Penn racked up 40 points in the paint, as the Quakers topped the Temple women's basketball team, 74-59, in Philadelphia Big 5 action on Wednesday night. The loss sets Temple's season record to 9-10, as the Owls finish 2-2 in Big 5 play. Penn improves to 10-5, clinching a share of the Big 5 title with Villanova, finishing at 3-1.

KEYS TO THE GAME
> Temple had no answer for Penn's post players, as the Quakers out-scored the Owls, 40-28 in the paint.
> The Owls suffered from a poor third quarter performance, shooting just 26% in the frame.
> Penn blocked seven Temple shots on the night, while forcing 16 Owl turnovers.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Senior Tanaya Atkinson tallied her 11th double-double of the season with 19 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
> Freshman Desiree Oliver had 14 points with five assists and four rebounds.
> Freshman Mia Davis rounded out the scoring with 11 points and eight rebounds.
> Junior Shantay Taylor tied a career best with seven rebounds. 

FIRST QUARTER
> Penn started the game on a 10-2 run, including striking for the first seven points of the frame.
> Temple responded with a 9-3 surge to cut the deficit to 13-11.
> The Quakers answered by closing the frame with a 12-3 run to make it 23-14 after one.

SECOND QUARTER
> Penn scored six straight to push the lead to 15 (29-14) with 8:10 on the clock.
> After the teams traded scores, Temple's Atkinson and Oliver sparked a 12-3 Owls' run.
> Atkinson had a pair of conventional three point plays, while Oliver added a pair from deep to make it a five point game -- 36-31.
> Penn regained some of its cushion, however, scoring six of the final nine points to lead 42-34 at the break.

THIRD QUARTER
> An 11-5 run to start the third quarter saw Penn take a 53-39 lead with 4:25 on the clock.
> The Owls pushed the lead back down to nine on a three point play from Davis, but Penn closed the quarter on a 16-10 run.

FOURTH QUARTER
> In the fourth, the Owls could get the lead no lower than 14 points, as Penn closed out the win.

UP NEXT
> Temple now returns to American Athletic Conference play, heading to #23 USF on Sunday.
