The 23rd highest scorer in Temple University basketball history with 899 points, Ed Lerner's total was remarkable for his era. He earned a starting position as a freshman and played in 85 games for the Owls. An accurate shooter, he made over 90 percent of his free throws. He starred in numerous games and some of his top performances came against nationally ranked opponents. He led Temple in scoring during the 1946-47 season with a 10.2 average and twice was the Owls' second highest scorer. He came to Temple from Southern High School where he was a unanimous selection for the All-Public League team in 1944. He was the Public League's high scorer and the first player in history to score over 200 points in a season, netting a record 203 points as a senior. Before enrolling at Temple, he was a starting forward on the Bainbridge Naval Training Station quintet that defeated the Owls in 1944. He was the leading scorer in the Jewish Basketball League while starring for Southern High.
