John Marzano

The Sporting News and Baseball America named John Marzano to their first All-American teams. A catcher, he batted .413 from 1982-84 for the Owls, the best career average in Temple history. He batted .448 as a senior in 1984, collecting 69 hits in 154 at bats. He hit 15 homers that season with 61 RBI and 25 extra base hits. He scored 55 runs. He also led the Owls in hitting as a junior, batting .398 with five home runs and 46 RBI. He played in the 1983 Pan-American Games. In his three seasons at Temple, he played in 117 games, hit 25 home runs, scored 131 runs, had 190 hits and 147 RBI. He was selected to play in the 1984 Olympics and had the distinction of hitting the first home run by a United States player. He played four years with the Boston Red Sox and one with the Texas Rangers. He has caught all-star pitchers like Boston's Roger Clemens and Seattle's Randy Johnson. He starred for Central High School before enrolling at Temple.
