PHILADELPHIA - Despite outshooting Virginia Tech 15-12, the Temple women's soccer team fell to the Hokies 2-1 Sunday afternoon (10-1-00).
Virginia Tech freshman Jessica Russell (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) found the back of the net at 25:37 to give her team the one goal advantage. Seven minutes later (32:44) Russell struck again, scoring what turned out to be the game-winning goal. At halftime, the Hokies were led the Owls 2-0.
Just five minutes into the second period, Temple forward Brenda Gore (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) got the Owls on the scoreboard 2-1 with an unassisted goal at 50:19. However, that concluded the scoring for the day.
Both Temple goalkeeper Courtney Woytowicz (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and Virginia Tech keeper Katie Hancock (Stockton, Md./Snow Hill) made five saves on the day.
Temple falls to 8-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the season. The Owls begin a two-game road trip as they travel to Rhode Island Friday, Oct. 6, to take on the Rams at 7:00 p.m.
