BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP, October 7) - Freshman cornerback Eric Green intercepted two passes and Virginia Tech held Temple to 116 yards as the No. 3 Hokies beat the Owls 35-13 on Saturday.
Green, making his first start for the Hokies (5-0, 3-0 Big East Conference), intercepted a pass and returned it 41 yards to set up a touchdown that gave the Hokies a 28-13 lead. He also intercepted a pass in the end zone with nine minutes left to play.
Temple (3-3, 0-2) cut the Hokies' 21-7 halftime lead when quarterback Michael Vick fumbled on the first play of the third quarter and linebacker Taylor Suman recovered for the Owls to set up Mike Frost's 26-yard TD pass to Charles Cobb.
Vick turned the ball over three times, was sacked four times, and rushed for just 55 yards. He had averaged 107.3 yards.
Virginia Tech held a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. Temple linebacker Chonn Lacey intercepted a pass by Vick and ran 65 yards for a touchdown with about a minute left in the half.
Virginia Tech took an early lead after tailback Wayne Ward blocked a punt two minutes into the game. Linebacker Ben Taylor recovered and ran for 9 yards. On the ensuing possession, tailback Lee Suggs ran 7 yards for the touchdown.
