Fall Ball Recap
11.9.00 | Softball
Temple fall softball 2000 can only be described as a RESOUNDING SUCCESS!! The Owls finished 11-4 in September and October play; a strong
showing that bodes well for the spring 2001 Atlantic Ten season.
The Owls opened their fall season at home with Delaware and Radford visiting the city. A win over Delaware and a loss to Radford marked the first
day's efforts and set the stage for our annual appearance in the Carole Weil Fall Classic in Allentown.
The tournament was named for a Temple third baseman (1982 season) who tragically passed away from leukemia in December of that year. In 2000, the
Owls clearly played well in honor of Carole's memory. The team finished 5-1 with a pair of wins each over Manhattan and Robert Morris along with a
single win over the College of New Jersey before dropping a 1-0 semi-final decision to Villanova .
At the City Six tournament, the Owls struggled a bit but still went 3-2. Temple defeated St.Joesph's, Drexel, and LaSalle while falling to Penn and again
Villanova.
The Owls concluded the fall back home again with back to back shutouts over Rider and Princeton. The overall 11-4 slate equates to a winning
percentage of .733, accomplished despite injuries to four key players.
Highlight individual pitching statistics for the Fall included Nanci Lima (4-1, 2.10),Crystal Bobo (3-2, 0.45) and Liz Naughton and Bari
Lynn Pflueger each won a pair of games as well. Hitting leaders were Alexis Pena(.341) and Katie Spencer(.325). Bari Lynn Pflueger also hit over .300.
Katie Spencer and Martha Serrato hit homeruns and lead the team in RBIs with eight and seven, respectively. The fielding (24 errors in 15 games or 1.6
per game) could still be improved; but several outstanding defensive plays particularly in the Carole Weil Fall Classic proved that the defensive aspect
of the game is coming around as well.
The Owls begin spring play February 16-17 at the North Carolina Triangle Tournament with bracket play against Minnesota, UNC-Wilmington and
Ohio. The home openers are March 24-25 against Fordham.
