Lacrosse Tops Virginia Tech, 18-6

PHILADELPHIA (April 10) - Temple senior Kelly Ruch (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville)
scored nine goals and added two assists to help the Owls (5-4; 3-0) defeat
Atlantic 10 rival Virginia Tech, 18-6, today on Geasey Field. The game had
originally been scheduled for yesterday but was delayed due to snow.
After Temple's Patience Synnestvedt (Bryn Athyn, Pa./Acad. of the New
Church) opened the game with a goal at 27:35, Ruch scored the next five for
the Owls, helping Temple to a 6-1 lead. Karen Diacont put the Hokies (4-5;
1-1) on the board at 21:59. Dawn Will scored twice in the first half
including a goal at the halftime buzzer to close the Hokies within 10-5.
Tech got within 10-6 on a Courtney Hubbard goal at 23:32 of the second.
After almost 10 minutes of scoreless play, Ruch added another goal at 14:06
followed by another at 9:12 to put Temple ahead 12-6. Temple goalie Iris
Alvarado (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) recorded 13 saves and stoped eight Tech
free position shots. Alvarado shut the Hokies down allowing just one goal in
the second half.
Ruch, who finished the game with nine goals and two assists, tied her career
high in goals and ranks third all-time with two other Owls in Temple's
record book. Her 11 points is the second most in the Owls' record book tying
two others.
