KINGSTON, R.I. -- Freshman Bari Pflueger threw five no-hit innings as Temple held off Rhode Island, 5-4, in
the second game of a doubleheader April 15 at the URI Softball Field.
The Rams nearly spoiled Pflueger's effort by nearly coming back from a 5-0 fifth-inning deficit.
Sophomore Erin Byrne got the Owls on the board in the third inning with a three-run triple. Temple added
to its lead with a pair in the top of the fifth inning to increase the advantage to 5-0.
The Rams answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Robin Davies reached on an error by the
rightfielder, and scored when Pflueger threw sophomore Gwen Rack's sacrifice bunt into centerfield. Rack,
who advanced to third on the error, scored on sophomore Crissy Tindall's ground out.
URI added two more in the sixth. Senior Samantha Zigmont broke up Pflueger's no-hit bid with a leadoff single
and scored on senior Courtnie Hyland's triple. Freshman Liz Naughton replaced Pflueger and was greeted by
freshman Shauna Newmiller, who doubled home Hyland to make it a 5-4 game. Naughton recovered to retire
the next three batters.
