Women's Lacrosse Falls To UMass, 5-3

AMHERST, Mass. Junior attacker Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.) scored

two goals and junior goaltender Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) made 14

saves as the University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team defeated

Temple 5-3 at Garber Field.

The Minutewomen opened the scoring a little less than nine minutes into

the game when senior midfielder Stephanie Pavlick (Blue Bell, Pa.)

scored off a feed from senior midfielder Rebecca Minaker (Newton,

Mass.). The Minutewomen increased their lead to 2-0 when Minaker scored

off a pass from Pavlick at the 8:32 mark of the first half.

Temple cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Kelly Ruch with a little more

than six minutes remaining in the half. Patience Synnestvedt assisted on

the goal.

Ingraffea netted two straight goals at the beggining of the second half

to give UMass a 4-1 lead. The Owls responded with a goal by Jen

Jefferson with 20:15 remaining. For the next eight minutes neither team

could score as Nardi and Temple goaltender Iris Alvarado (10 saves)

traded saves. Finally at the with 12 minutes left in regulation UMass

senior midfielder Sara MacNabb (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored off a feed

from junior attacker Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.).

Temple pulled to within two goals when Ruch netted her second tally of

the game at the 4:11 mark, but Nardi kept Temple from scoring in the

closing minutes to secure the 5-3 victory for UMass.

UMass improves to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 with the win,

while the loss drops Temple to 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the A-10. The win

marked the first time since 1980 that UMass has beaten Temple.

The Minutewomen will return to action on Tuesday, April 25, when they

travel to Storrs, Connecticut to face UConn in a 4:00 p.m. game.
