No. 1 Maryland Downs Temple 12-7

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (May 2) - The top-ranked Maryland Terrapins (18-1) finished

their 2000 regular season with a five-goal win over Temple (8-8), May 2, at Ludwig Field. Maryland was led by Allison Comito (Glen Head, N.Y.), who netted four goals, and Jen Adams (Marino, South Australia), who finished the day with seven points off five goals and

two assists. Kelly Ruch led Temple with two goals and two assists.

Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Courtney Hobbs (West

Lakes, South Australia), Comito, and Christie Jenkins (Media, Pa.)

before Ruch netted Temple's first goal of the day. Maryland would add

eight more goals before the half from an array of Terrapins, including

ACC Player of the Year Adams, senior tri-captain Kristin Sommar (North

Wales, Pa.), and defender Tori Wellington (Chesnut Hill, Mass.) to take

an 11-4 advantage into halftime.

The Owls would put the clamp on the Maryland offense in the second half

after a goalie change that saw regular starter Iris Alvarado enter the

game for the first time all afternoon. Alvarado allowed just one goal, a

season low in a half by the No. 1 Terps, and finished the game with

nine saves in 30 minutes. For the Terps, four-year starter Alex Kahoe

(Villanova, Pa.) turned in another stellar performance, allowing only

seven goals in 60 minutes of action and compiling 11 saves on the day.

The game marked her eighth consecutive double-digit save effort.

The win over Temple signaled the end of the regular season for the

top-ranked Terrapins. Maryland, who is challenging for their sixth

consecutive NCAA title, awaits this Sunday's selection show to see who

its potential NCAA opponent will be. Temple heads to Amherst, Mass.,

this weekend for the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which begins on May 5 and

continues through May 6 at the University of Massachusetts. The Owls

currently own a 5-1 Atlantic 10 record.
