Temple Owls Survive Scare From Niagara Purple Hawks

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's soccer team survived a three goal comeback by Niagara University to defeat the Purple Hawks 5-3 Saturday afternoon (9-9-00).
The Owls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a Brenda Gore (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) goal at 24:40 of the first period. Jeanette Hibbs (Philadelphia/St. Hubert's) assisted her. Gore struck again five minutes later on a pass from Johanna Yemm (Ft. Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) to give Temple a 2-0 lead. Liz Frengs (Collingswood, N.J./Collingswood) capped off the first-half scoring with 1:10 left. Marirose Roach (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) assisted Frengs to give the Owls the 3-0 halftime lead.
The Purple Hawks stormed back early in the second period. Lynda Hughes scored twice, and Allie Stahlen found the net to put Niagara even 3-3 with the Owls.
Yemm recorded the game winner with less than seven minutes to play. Yemm was assisted by Frengs to give the Owls a 4-3 lead. Jeanette Hibbs (Philadelphia/St. Hubert's) added an insurance goal a minute later with an assist from Brook Cholaj (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham).
The Owls outshot the Purple Hawks 20-11. Temple faces Delaware at Temple Stadium Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 4:00 p.m.
