PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The American Football Coaches Association announced today that Temple University senior linebacker
LeVar Talley has been selected to the 2000 AFCA Good Works Team. As one of 11 Division I-A football players across the
country to receive the honor, Talley was recognized for his exceptional dedication to community service and to the betterment of the
community in which he lives.
Talley, a Philadelphia native and graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School, is a two-time team captain and is also on the Butkus
Award watch list. The Butkus Award honors annually the country's best collegiate linebacker. Since joining the Temple football team
in 1996, Talley has been a part of numerous charitable functions including "Temple Teammates." Temple Teammates is the charitable
wing of the Temple University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Talley has helped to organize a relationship with the Temple
football team and Temple Childrens Medical Center. He is also the liaison for the football team on the Temple University
student-athlete advisory council.
The sports and recreation management major has extended his charity work to the Philadelphia community as well. During the
offseason Talley has visited Smith Community Playground in Philadelphia, and local community recreation facilities to speak to
children about the importance of athletics and academics in his life. Talley and his sister Erika visit Philadelphia-area hospices and
homeless shelters during the holidays to serve food and speak with the residents. He credits his sister for the influence she has had on
him and his involvement with community service.
On the field, Talley has led a Temple defense that is currently ranked fourth in the country. His 37 tackles ranks him second in the
BIG EAST Conference in tackles per game with 12.3. At the start of the 2000 season Talley was the BIG EAST's second leading
returning tackler after a 131 tackle performance in 1999.
Head coach Bobby Wallace and the Owls are off to their best start, 2-1, since the 1994 season. Temple faces Eastern Michigan at
Franklin Field this Saturday, September 23 at 6:00 p.m. The game will be televised locally on CN8.
