PENIC AND ERCEGOVIC WIN BIG AT THE EASTERN REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS

PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomores Danira Penic (Split, Croatia) and Lara Ercegovic (Split, Croatia) advanced to the championship round in doubles play at the Omni Hotels Eastern Region Women's Tennis Championships this past weekend October 26-30, 2001. The duo lost to Old Dominion University 5-8 in the final match. The duo defeated teams from Long Island University, St. Bonaventure, Penn State as well as tennis powerhouses Virginia Tech and William and Mary.

In singles action, Penic advanced to the quarterfinal round that featured eight players. Penic defeated Daniela Kaluskova of Syracuse 6-1, 6-3, Jessica Arthur of William and Mary 6-1, 6-0 and Lara Van Rooyen of Old Dominion 6-2, 6-4 before losing to Alice Pirsu of Penn 4-6, 1-6 in the quarterfinal round. Ercegovic advanced to the field of 16 when she defeated Maria Husain of Penn State 6-1, 6-3 and Henriette Williams of Virginia 6-4, 7-5 before losing to Jessica Johnson of Marshall 6-1, 1-6, 4-6. Both women advanced from a field of over ninety singles players.

Overall this season, in the No.1 singles and doubles spot for the Temple Owls, Penic is

8-3 and 9-2 respectively, including a first place finish in the Flight A bracket of the Dartmouth Invitational. In the No. 2 singles and doubles spots, Ercegovic is 9-3 and 11-3 respectively, including a first place finish in the Flight A bracket of the Brown Invitational.
