TEMPLE VERSUS RUTGERS GAME NOTES
10.8.01 | Football
The Owls (1-3, 0-1 Big East) are coming off a 33-10 loss to Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. last Saturday. Senior Mac DeVito completed 11-of-21 passes for 101 yards in relief of freshman starter Mike McGann, who exited the game with a thumb injury late in the second quarter. Although bolstered by a strong defensive effort, Temple was unable to execute effectively behind an offensive line hampered by injuries. Junior Tanardo Sharps had his most productive rushing game of the season, carrying 24 times for 80 yards while hauling in four receptions for 29 yards. The Owls' lone touchdown came on a two-yard scamper by fullback Jason McKie in the fourth quarter. Boston College's William Green, the nation's fifth leading rusher, carried 25 times for 113 yards and scored on runs of two and 28 yards in the second half.
Rutgers (1-4, 0-3 Big East), under the direction of first-year head coach Greg Schiano, suffered a 24-17 loss to Syracuse in Piscataway, N.J. last Saturday. The Orangemen's James Mungro, who carried 23 times for 140 yards, caught a two-yard pass from R.J. Anderson with 1:18 left to squelch a potential overtime finale. Placekicker Steve Barone missed four field goals and an extra point for the Scarlet Knights, who were looking to notch their second upset win over Syracuse in the past four years. Ravon Anderson carried 13 times for 163 yards and Ryan Cubit completed 19 of 34 passes for 224 yards to spark Rutgers.
As part of the Firefighters Union's "Fill the Helmet" campaign, Temple University and Philadelphia Firefighters Union Local 22 have partnered to raise money for the victims of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center in New York. Temple is donating the price of one ticket to the campaign for every two that are purchased for Saturday's contest. A salute to Philadelphia's police and firefighters will highlight Saturday's events. The Police and Fire Honor Guard will appear with the Temple University Diamond Band in pre-game and halftime activities, and a host of VIPs will be in attendance.
In addition, the Monkees, one of the biggest-selling groups of the 60's, will perform following the game. Three original members of the Monkees, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork will perform a 30 minute show of their greatest hits including "Last Train To Clarksville," "I'm A Believer," "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," "Mary, Mary," "Daydream Believer," and more. The first 4,000 fans in attendance will receive a free Homecoming Rally Towel.
