TEMPLE WOMEN'S SOCCER SEASON HAD HIGHS AND LOWS

PHILADELPHIA - The 2001 Owls started off the season with a 4-2 record in non-conference action. After winning the first game of the season against Fairleigh Dickinson, Temple lost to Creighton and defeated Northern Iowa in the Blue Jay Classic tournament in Omaha, Nebraska. After opening Atlantic 10 conference play with a 0-0 tie against Saint Joseph's University, Temple went on to win two of the next three games, including a conference victory over St. Bonaventure. The Owls closed out the season losing eight straight. Temple ended with an overall record of 6-11-1 and was 1-9-1 in the conference.

Junior midfielder Jeanette Hibbs (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) led the team in scoring with 18 points. She recorded seven goals, four assists, three game-winning shots, more than doubling her career total. Junior forward Johanna Yemm and senior forward Brandi Wright tied for second on the team in scoring with seven points on two goals and three assists. Wright ended her Temple career third on Temple's career scoring list with 26 goals and tied for second in career points with 59.

The Owls freshman recruiting class stepped upped during the season and contributed to the offense and defense. Freshman forward Theresa Peronace (Philadelphia, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie), who saw action in seven games and scored seven points (three goals, one assist) as a true freshman. Midfielder Melissa Foley (Hamilton, N.J/Nottingham H.S.) played in 16 games for the Owls and scored seven points on three goals and one assist. Foley and Peronace tied for second place on the team in points scored. Goalkeeper Jackie Mauro started 15 games and saw action in 17 games for the Owls. Mauro posted 86 saves and recorded a 1.52 Goals Against Average.

Temple women's soccer program led by head coach Seamus Mc Williams earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Team Academic Award for the third time (1997-98,1999-2000 and 2001-2002) in four years. Temple was one of 229 women's programs and 34 men's programs (including NAIA, Division I, II and III schools) to receive the honor.
