"A.C." SPARKS TEMPLE TO FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team (1-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10) won its first game of the season at home against Pennsylvania (2-2, 0-0 Ivy League) 66-60 on November 28. The Owls led 29-22 at halftime and led by as many as 12 before the Quakers came back to briefly take the lead 46-44 with 8:38 remaining before Temple on the strength of senior forward Athena Christoforakis (A.C.) took over down the stretch.

Athena Christoforakis dominated the floor with a career-high 27 points on 11-15 shooting and game high 13 rebounds, including eight offensive boards, in 31 minutes. Christaforakis scored 21 of her points in the second half. Fellow senior Ieesha Turnage came off the bench to contribute 10 points on 3-6 shooting and was a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line in 25 minutes.

The Owls shot 10-35, just 28.6 percent in the first half but picked it up the during the final 20 minutes shooting 15-28 for 53.6 percent. Free throw shooting was a weakness for Temple, especially in the second half when the team shot 5-10 from the charity stripe

Mikaelyn Austin led the Quakers with 16 points and Jewel Clark added 14 points and grabbed a team high 11 rebounds. Katie Kilker added 11 points for the visitors. Pennsylvania shot 40 percent from the field but was outrebounded 46-36.

Up next for Temple another home game on Saturday, December 1, against Villanova at 2:00 p.m. The game is the first half of a men's/women's doubleheader. The men's team will face Penn State at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on CN8.
