TEMPLE'S CHONN LACEY BECOMES SECOND OWL TO ACCEPT INVITATION TO PLAY IN 2001 BLUE-GRAY ALL-STAR FOOTBALL CLASSIC

12.14.01 | Football

Temple senior cornerback Chonn Lacey (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown H.S.) has accepted an invitation to play in the annual Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic to be played on Christmas Day in Montgomery, Alabama. Lacey joins senior defensive end Raheem Brock (Philadelphia/Dobbins H.S.) who accepted an invitation to participate in the game on November 30.

Lacey (6-2, 218) was believed to be the only "three-way" player in Division I-A football in 2001, playing on offense, defense and special teams in six of the Owls' first seven contests. He contributed at defensive back, wide receiver and on punt and kickoff coverage units to average 75.4 snaps per game during that stretch. At Boston College he started both ways, at wide receiver and cornerback. On the season, Lacey started all 11 games and led the squad in tackles with 84 (68 solo) and in interceptions with four. He also posted three tackles-for-loss, six pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Offensively, Lacey caught 13 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Twice cited in his career as the Big East Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Lacey ranks fourth in all-time solo tackles at Temple with 215 (299 total) and seventh in interceptions with 10. He played in 43 career games, making 40 consecutive starts to end his tenure in Owl Country.

With Lacey and Brock's acceptance, Temple will have four student-athlete participate in the Classic since 1998. Last season, current Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive tackle Mathias Nkwenti represented the Owls. In 1998, current Jacksonville Jaguars' running back Stacey Mack was selected as the game's most valuable player.

The Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic is the first post season all-star game each year. Proceeds from the Classic go to the Lions Club sight conservation projects and youth charities. This year's game will kick off at 12 noon EST at the Cramton Bowl and will be televised live by ABC.
