"It is an honor to be selected to coach in a game with the history and tradition of the Blue-Gray Classic," said Wallace. "I'm proud that our hard work on defense this year has been recognized by the college football community. It is also very exciting to have four people from our program represent Temple University before a national audience."
Temple concluded the 2001 season ranked 19th nationally in total defense, allowing just 312.64 yards per contest. The Owls also placed 23rd against the pass (182.82) and tied for 16th nationally with 14 recovered fumbles. Temple finished strong, winning its final two games en route to a 4-7 record, while placing sixth in the Big East Conference with a 2-5 league mark.
Wallace will be the third Temple head coach to pace the sidelines at the Blue-Gray Classic since the game's inception in 1938. Most recently, Bruce Arians coached in 1985. Prior to that, Ray Morrison instructed players for four straight years from 1945 to 1948.
Wallace and Monica will be joined on the sideline by Arizona State head coach Dirk Koetter and assistant Tom Osborne, who will be directing the offense. The Gray offense will be headed by Tulane's Chris and Frank Selfo, with the defense under the direction of Virginia's Al Groh and Al Golden.
The Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic, now in its 64th season, is the first postseason all-star game each year. Proceeds from the Classic go to the Lions Club sight conservation projects and youth charities. This year's game will kick of at 12 noon EST at the Cramton Bowl and will be televised live by ABC.
