SANTA CLARA SHOOTS DOWN TEMPLE WOMEN

12.20.01 | Women's Basketball

Santa Clara, Calif. -- The Temple women's basketball team (3-5, 0-0) may have traveled west to play Santa Clara (8-2, 0-0) but its game went south as the Owls lost to the Broncos 86-66 on December 19. The 20-point loss represents the widest margin of defeat in the Dawn Staley era. Temple, which normally feasts off of its opponents mistakes, forced 22 turnovers, but yielded an uncharacteristic 17. The Owls were also outrebounded 47-33.

Senior forward Athena Christoforakis led Temple with 12 points and seven rebounds. Chhristoforakis was the only Owl to score in double figures. Natalia Isaac (nine points), Stacey Smalls (eight points, five assists) and Melissa Dunne (eight points) were also key contributors for the Cherry and White. Freshman guard Cynthia Jordan saw her first extended playing time of the season and chipped in with a career-high seven points, including 5-5 from the free throw line.

Caroline Gruening led Santa Clara with 16 points and she also had five assists. Kendra Rhea (14 points) Becki Ashbaugh (13 points, nine assists) and Tammy Annas (12 points) were the other double-digit scorers for the Broncos.

Temple trailed 21-18 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half but Santa Clara went on a 21-7 run to end the first period with a 17 point advantage. In the second half, the Owls pulled to within 12 on three different occasions but Santa Clara always had an answer, usually from beyond the arc, to spoil any hopes of a Temple comeback.

Next up for the Owls is a visit to Seton Hall on Friday, December 28. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
