12.31.01 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- Home, sweet home. After back-to-back double-digit road losses, the Temple women's basketball team (4-6, 0-0) got back on the winning track -- in a big way -- with a home win over Maryland-Eastern Shore (4-6, 0-0) 84-38 in the first round of the inaugural Temple Holiday Classic on December 30. The Owls jumped out to a 55-14 halftime lead and never looked back. In fact, Temple led by as many as 50 points, forced 37 UMES turnovers and collected 18 steals en route to the victory. All 12 Owls in uniform scored in the game.

Junior guard Regan Apo led Temple in scoring with a season-high 19 points. Athena Christoforakis (12 points, eight rebounds, three steals) and Natalia Isaac (10 points) were the other double figure scorers for the Owls.

Destiney Avent led Maryland-Eastern Shore in scoring with eight points as no UMES player scored in double figures. Antoinette Daniels led the Lady Hawks in rebounding with 10 boards. In fact, rebounding and blocked shots were the only phases of the game that Maryland-Eastern Shore controlled. The Lady Hawks outrebounded the Owls 52-47 and recorded nine blocks while the home team had none.

The win advances Temple to the championship of the Temple Holiday Classic where it will face Mississippi, a 105-46 winner of its opening round game against Fairleigh Dickinson. Tipoff for the consolation game (UMES vs. Fairleigh Dickinson) is at 12:00 noon followed by the championship, scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
