TEMPLE WOMEN LOSE HEARTBREAKER AT SOUTH CAROLINA
12.4.01 | Women's Basketball
Natalia Isaac led the Owls with a season-high 23 points on 7-16 shooting, including 5-11 from the three-point arc but the biggest shot of the night for Isaac was the one that didn't count. With 27 seconds remaining and the Lady Gamecocks leading 64-60, Isaac nailed a three-pointer that was disallowed when South Carolina Shaunzinski Gortman fouled center Lisa Jakubowicz off the ball. Had Isaac's basket counted, Jakubowicz would have stepped to the line with the opportunity to tie the game.
Athena Christoforakis (12), Stacey Smalls (11), and Jakubowicz (10) were the other double figure scorers for the Owls. Christoforakis was Temple's leading rebounder with eight boards. The Owls had their best game of the season from the foul line as they shot 15-18 from the charity stripe.
Temple led by as many as 14 in the first half and held a 28-22 lead at halftime. South Carolina used a 12-3 run at the start of the second half to get back into the game. Jocelyn Penn led the Lady Gamecocks with 16 points. Tatyana Troina (12) and Teresa Geter (10) were the other double figure scorers for South Carolina. The Lady Gamecocks outshot (51 percent to 42 percent) outrebounded (33-31) and won the assist (22-16), turnover (18-19) and steals (12-9) battles. South Carolina also feasted inside, outscoring Temple 30-6 on points in the paint.
Next up for the Owls a home date with #3 Vanderbilt, Temple's third SEC opponent of the season, on Sunday, December 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Liacouras Center.
