12.9.01 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team (2-4, A-10 0-0) tried to play the spoiler's role against third-ranked Vanderbilt (10-1, 0-0 SEC) on Sunday afternoon, December 9 at the Liacouras Center but fell to the Commodores 84-74. The Owls used their trademark defensive pressure against the Vanderbilt to make the game a battle throughout. While the COmmodres shot an eye-popping 68 percent from the field for the game, Temple forced the No. 3 team in the country to commit 19 turnovers. Temple, which trailed by three points at halftime (37-34) led by as many as eight points in the second half before the Commodores' hot shooting coupled with an Owls' drought that lasted over five minutes put the visitors up for good.

"We always schedule tough on the road," said Vanderbilt coach Jim Foster, a Philadelphia native and Temple alum. "We knew Temple would come after us. I have a lot of respect for coach Staley and the Temple program," he continued.

Senior guard Natalia Isaac led the way for the Owls scoring 23 points, the second straight game she has reached that total. Isaac shot 6-14 overall including a sizzling 6-9 from three-point range while adding two assists and a steal in 27 minutes of action. As a team the Owls shot 12-25 (48%) from three-point range. Off the bench for Temple, senior Ieesha Turnage (11) and sophomore Christina Hamilton (14) combined for 25 points while sophomore Toni Belafonte gave the Owls a great defensive effort against Vanderbilt's superior size.

"They are a great team," said Temple coach Dawn Staley. "They read our defenses well. You are not going to hold a great team like that down for 40 minutes. I'm proud of my team," she continued.

Center Chantelle Anderson led the Commodores with 24 points including 6-6 at the free throw line. Vanderbilt had four other players in double figures including Zuzi Klimesova (18), Ashley Mcelhiney (11), Jillian Danker (14) and Ashley Earley (10). Vanderbilt also feasted at the line where it shot 20 more free throws (33) than the Owls (13).

Next up for the Owls a visit to Rutgers on Sunday, December 16. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
