Hawks Win Battle of the Birds and Big Five Title

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team (16-9, 9-5) lost a basketball game and an opportunity when it fell to at St. Joseph's (14-12, 8-7) 57-47 on February 19.
The rough and tumble game was a war from the outset as defense dominated the first half and the Owls took a 19-16 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Hawks took advantage of Temple inside and St. Joseph's feasted at the free throw line where it made 19-23 from the line down the stretch to pull away and seal the victory.
The Owls' Big Five record fell to 2-2, while St. Joseph's improved to 4-0 in the city series to win its 11th outright title. Temple was led in scoring by senior guard Natalia Isaac with 12 points. Junior center Lisa Jakubowicz (10) was the only other Owl to score in double figures. Jakubowicz also led the Owls in rebounding with 10 boards to record her fourth double-double of the season.
Angela Zamppella (19) led the Hawks in scoring. Susan Moran (14) and Irina Krasnoshiok (12) also scored in double figures for St. Joseph's. Moran also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Hawks.
Both teams shot free throws well (Temple 88.9 percent, St. Joseph's 85.2 percent) but St. Joseph's went to the free throw line three times as much as Temple did (St. Joseph's 23-27, Temple 8-9) and held an 11 point advantage from the charity stripe.
Next up for the Owls, the La Salle Explorers come to visit the Liacouras Center on Wednesday, February 21. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
