Owls Travel To Raleigh, N.C. And Come Away With Three Wins

The Temple Owls began the 2001 season Friday with two games in the
Triangle Classic in Raleigh, North Carolina. In the opener, the Owls
lost to the University of Minnesota 11-2. Freshman Crystal Taylor and
senior Andrea Horton scored Temple's only runs, both in the fourth
inning. Junior Katie Spencer and freshman Lynsey Grace led the Owl's
offensive attack with two hits a piece.
The Owls bounced back in the second game and defeated UNC-Wilmington
3-1. Sophomore Chrissy Harris and freshman Lynsey Grace both scored in
the second inning on RBI singles by freshman Alexis Gary and senior
Kendra Navarro. Harris, Grace, and sophomore Bari Lynn Pflueger each
had base hits for the Owls. Sophomore pitcher Liz Naughton shut down
the Seahawks, giving up only 3 hits in five innings with no earned runs.
Action continued as the Owls opened up Saturday afternoon with an
exciting 3-2, extra-inning victory, over Ohio University. Frehman Katie
Weigle scored the Owl's first run in the sixth inning. Ohio tied the
game in the seventh and scored again in the eighth inning to take a 2-1
lead. Temple answered back in the bottom of the eighth with runs by
Navarro and Weigle, both on passed balls. Junior Alexis Pena had two of
the Owls' six hits in the victory. Pflueger had a strong performance on
the mound giving up only four hits in eight innings and striking out
four batters.
The Owl's two-game winning streak ended with a 3-0 loss to Eastern
Kentucky on Saturday night. Temple's Spencer, Pflueger, Gary, and
freshman Marissa McDevitt each had hits in the loss.
Temple scored three runs in the seventh inning to beat Elon 8-7 on
Sunday morning. Weigle had two hits and scored one run. Junior Martha
Serrato scored three times and Grace scored twice in the victory.
Temple ended the weekend with a hard fought, 2-1 loss to
UNC-Greensboro. Senior Holly Mahal scored on an RBI single by Harris in
the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Owls were unable
to answer an eighth inning run by UNC-Greensboro. Pflueger and Navarro
were both 2-for-3in the loss.
