Owls Battle In N.C. For Second Straight Week

The Temple softball team (4-7) returned to North Carolina over the
weekend as it traveled to Greenville for the Pirate Classic, hosted by
East Carolina University. The Owls won only one of their five outings in
the rain-shortened tournament, but freshman left fielder, Lynsey Grace,
was named to the all-tournament team for her outstanding offensive
performance.
In the Owls tournament opener versus UNC-Greensboro, back-to-back
doubles in the sixth inning by Grace and sophomore Bari Lynn Pflueger
produced the Owl’s only run in a 2-1 loss. The Cherry and White faired
no better that afternoon against the Stags of Fairfield. Junior Martha
Serrato had the Owl’s lone hit in a 2-0 loss.
Temple drew the host team Saturday morning as East Carolina scored 10
runs on 12 hits, defeating the Owls 10-1. Grace again had a strong
performance at the plate for Temple, going 2-for-3 with a single and a
triple. Temple’s offensive struggles continued in a 4-1 loss to St.
John’s on Saturday afternoon. The Owls scored its lone run in the fifth
inning on a passed ball. Freshman Alexis Gary was 1-for-3 with a double
in the fifth inning against the Red Storm.
Temple ended the weekend in an up-beat manner with a 3-0 victory over
Towson University. Junior Katie Spencer was 3-for-3, while Gary went
2-for-3 with an RBI single in the first inning against versus the
Tigers. Winning pitcher Bari Lynn Pflueger gave up only three hits and
struck out five batters in the victory.
