Women's Basketball Edges Explorers in Closing Seconds

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team (13-7, 6-3) survived an Atlantic 10 Conference battle with La Salle (11-10, 5-5) 68-67. The winning points were scored on a lay-up by junior center Lisa Jakubowicz in the closing seconds. The game also counts in the Philadelphia Big 5 city series standings where the Owls are now 2-1.

Junior forward Athena Christoforakis led the Owls with a season-high 20 points and 12 rebounds, her second straight double-double. Jakubowicz (13) and sophomore guard Stacey Smalls (10) also scored in double figures for Temple.

The Owls trailed at halftime 23-22 and then turned on the A.C. in the second half. Christoforakis (A.C.) scored 11 of her 20 points in the second half as the Owls fought off the Explorers in the final 20 minutes by shooting a blistering 68 percent from the field.

La Salle was led by Jen Zenzer's 21 points. Shannon McDade (15) and Marjorie Rhoads (10) also scored in double figures for the Explorers.

Next up for Temple, a chance to avenge a Super Bowl Sunday loss to George Washington as the Colonials come to town on Friday, February 9 at the Liacouras Center. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
