Owls Take Two Out of Three from Hawks in Weekend Series

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple softball team won a key weekend series over previous league leader, St.Joseph's Hawks. The Owls won the first
game of a doubleheader on Saturday 11-3, dropped the second game 6-1
and captured the swing game 8-1 to take the series.
The two weekend victories raised the Owls' record to (18-20,7-1, A-10) and handed the Hawks their first two conference losses of the season.
In the first game, St. Joe's scored 2 runs on 3 hits in the top of the 3rd. Temple responded in the 5th inning scoring 6 runs on 5 hits. Juniors Bari Lynn Pflueger (doubled in 2 runs) and Katie Spencer (doubled in 2 runs) led the Owls' scoring barrage. St Joe's added one more run in the top of the sixth. Temple added 5 more runs in the bottom of the 6th on 6 hits. The winning pitcher Bari Pflueger (10-8) allowed 3 runs on 8 hits.
In game two, the Hawks scored six runs on 15 hits. Temple responded with one run on 5 hits and committed 5 costly errors. Ashley Caudill scored the Owls only run in the 4th inning (doubled and scored on a wild pitch). The losing pitcher Liz Naughton (7-8) allowed 3 runs on 10 hits in 5 innings.
In the third game, on Sunday the Owls scored all eight of their runs in the 5th inning, four of the runs on a grand slam by winning pitcher Bari Lynn Pflueger. Pflueger went (4-4 with 4 RBI's) and raised her team leading win total to eleven (11-8) as Temple romp to an 8-1 victory in the deciding third game. Freshman Kim Watkins pitched the last two-thirds of the 6th inning to earn her first save of her career
The Owls (18-20,7-1, A-10) will next visit conference leader Massachusetts on Saturday and Sunday April 14-15 in a four game (doubleheaders on both days) weekend series. The starting time is noon for both games.
