PHILADELPHIA- Offensive tackle Mathias Nkwenti (Rockville, MD/Thomas S.
Wootton HS), who completed his four-year collegiate career with the
Temple University football team last fall, was tabbed in the fourth
round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. His selection
was No. 111 overall.
The 6-4, 281-pound Nkwenti, who was selected to play in the annual
Blue-Gray Collegiate All-Star football game in December, earned four
varsity letters at Temple. He appeared in 35 games and made 13 starts,
including 11 in his senior year. Recruited as a defensive tackle prior
to the 1997 season, Nkwenti was converted to the offensive side of the
ball in the spring of 2000 and almost immediately blossomed into a solid
NFL prospect.
Nkwenti was one of 18 BIG EAST Conference players selected in the
draft. That group included a conference-record six players chosen in the
first round, led by the No. 1 pick of the Atlanta Falcons, Virginia Tech
quarterback Michael Vick.
