Streaking Owls Face The Hawks In The Opening Round Of A-10 Championship

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple softball team will play the St.Joseph's Hawks in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship. The championship will start on Thursday, May 10 and conclude on Saturday, May 12 at the University of Dayton's Stuart Field.

The Owls (28-24, 15-6 A-10) riding a ten- game win streak will enter the championship as the second seed and will face the third seeded Hawks on Thursday (May 10) at 2p.m. Temple will be making their 16th championship appearance. Temple took two out of three from the Hawks at home April 7-8. The Owls grabbed the front end of a doubleheader 11-3, the Hawks took the backend 6-1 and Temple romped to an 8-1 victory in the swing game the next day. The Owls claimed the Atlantic 10 regular season title twice (1985 and 1987) and shared the title with A-10 power Massachusetts in 1990.

Massachusetts (40-11,21-0,A-10) will enter the championship, as the one seed and ranked 23rd in the nation. The Minutewomen the defending conference champions have won the A-10 championship 13 times and the last six in a row. UMass will face Rhode Island (28-28,10-11,A-10) the number four seed in the opening game at noon on Thursday.

Temple (28-24, 15-6,A-10) enters this year postseason with the second most wins in a season in the school's history with 28. The 1996 Owls hold the school's record for most wins in a season with 31; they finished with an overall record of 31-20.
