The 2001 season was a break-through year for the program under fourth-year head coach Rocci Pignoli ... The Owls not only qualified for a second-consecutive appearance in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, they posted the program's first win in the competition since 1997 and played more games than any team in the history of the program ... The team's 29 wins ranks second in program history (31, 1996) ... Following a 9-16 pre-conference log, the Owls won five of their first A-10 games and produced a seven-game win streak ... The team closed the regular season with 10 consecutive wins, finishing second in the A-10 and rising to the No. 5 rank among 54 teams in the region ... At the A-10 Tournament in Dayton, the Owls defeated St. Joseph's before falling in successive games to Massachusetts and Rhode Island ... Individual honors for the season: sophomore pitcher-first baseman Bari Lynn Pflueger - All-Atlantic 10 Conference first team, All-Mid Atlantic Region second team, Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team, A-10 Player of the Week (4/2); sophomore pitcher-third baseman Liz Naughton - Atlantic 10 Conference All-Tournament Team, A-10 Pitcher of the Week (4/23); freshman catcher Katie Mennig - A-10 Rookie of the Week (4/23); freshman outfielder Lynsey Grace - A-10 Player of the Week (4/30).
