Navy at Temple game notes

8.28.01 | Football

Temple and Navy begin their 2001 seasons Thursday at 7 p.m. at Franklin Field. The Owls official home is Veterans Stadium, but due to a scheduling conflict with the Philadelphia Eagles, they will square off against the Midshipmen in the 52,593-seat stadium which is home to the Division I-AA Pennsylvania Quakers.

Tonight's game is the first of six home games for Temple. The first three (Aug. 30, Navy; Sept. 8, Toledo; Sept. 15, Connecticut) will take place at Franklin Field, with the latter three (Oct. 13, Rutgers; Oct. 27, Pittsburgh; Nov. 10, Virginia Tech) scheduled at Veterans Stadium.

Temple, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Bobby Wallace, is coming off a 4-7 (1-6 Big East) campaign which saw the Owls lose three games by a TD or less. The team is poised to dress 53 returning letterwinners, including 19 starters, 10 on defense and nine on offense. The Owls' 4-7 mark in 2000, was the program's best since 1990. Wallace has a 1-2 record in season openers at Temple.

Navy, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Charlie Weatherbie, is coming off a 1-10 season. The Midshipmen return 33 lettermen, including 11 starters, seven on defense and four on offense. The team will be without QB Brian Madden and DE Michael Wagoner, who have been suspended for the game due to a violation of Naval Academy rules.
