9.18.01 | Women's Basketball
"Coach Baldwin will be a great addition to our coaching staff," said head coach Dawn Staley. "He brings a vast amount of experience and knowledge as a basketball coach to our program".
Prior to coming to Temple, Baldwin, 47, was the head coach at UNC-Charlotte (1988-2001). Baldwin was the winningest coach in UNC-Charlotte history, compiling a record of 175-191 in 13 seasons. In addition to guiding the 49ers to their first postseason bid, Baldwin directed the team to its first league title and established new records for single-season wins (26) and single-season winning percentage (.793). He has also had his share of stints with USA Basketball and in 1998, gave his own team a taste of international experience with a European tour that included games in Germany and Belgium.
Prior to his arrival at Charlotte, Baldwin worked for three years as an assistant to 1988 Olympic coach Kay Yow at North Carolina State. During his three seasons with the Wolfpack, Baldwin was instrumental in recruiting the talent of current WNBA players Andrea Stinson, Sharon Manning and Rhonda Mapp. NC State was 52-35 while he was there, winning the 1987 Atlantic Coast Conference title and making NCAA appearances in 1986 and 1987.
Baldwin began his coaching career at Raleigh's Broughton High School. The Caps compiled a 124-26 record during his six years there and won state 4-A championships in 1983 and 1985. In the years before he left, the team won four straight conference titles and lost just two of 84 games in his final three years. He was recognized for his efforts on no fewer than three occasions, earning Coach of the Year honors from the Raleigh Times and the Raleigh Sports Club. In 1986, he was tabbed the North Carolina High School Coach of the Year by the Greensboro Record.
Baldwin graduated from North Carolina Central University with a degree in social studies in 1976. While there, he was a four-year letterwinner on the offensive line in football. He earned all-conference honors his junior and senior seasons and was voted Outstanding Offensive Lineman by his teammates. He also served as a team captain his senior year. Baldwin is married to the former Terri Hemphill. Married in 1994, they have a daughter, Shantia, who is 15 and a son, Stevon, who is six.
