9.3.01 | Football

The Temple Owls and Toledo Rockets enter Saturday's contest with eight days rest after both notched convincing home victories on Thursday, August 30. The Owls (1-0, 0-0) captured their largest season-opening win since 1994 (Akron, 32-7) by defeating Navy, 45-26, before 26,191 fans in a game that they led from the opening kickoff to the final gun. Temple held the Midshipmen to 49 yards rushing, as the Owls gained 285 yards on the ground. Toledo (1-0, 0-0) dismantled Big Ten opponent Minnesota, 38-7, behind a ground attack that saw two Rockets (Chester Taylor, 18-186; Antwon McCray, 14-120) gain over 100 yards rushing. Toledo received 40 votes (30th) in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and 25 (33rd) in most recent AP poll.

The victory evened head coach Bobby Wallace's opening day mark at Temple at 2-2 and brought his overall season opening day record as a head coach to 10-4. For Toledo, the win over the Golden Gophers gave Tom Amstutz a victory in his first game pacing the collegiate sidelines as a head coach.

Saturday's game presents an opportunity for Temple to start the season 2-0, something the Owls have not accomplished since 1981.

The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff and can be heard live on WPEN (950 AM). The first 4,000 fans will receive brushed cotton Temple caps. Next week, Saturday, Sept. 15, the first 2,500 fans 14 and under entering the Franklin Field gates to see the Owls take on Connecticut will receive "Hooter" bobble head dolls.
