"I think we had opportunities early and when we didn't score, we lost our confidence," said head coach Bobby Wallace.
The game was far from error free as the teams combined for 32 penalties for 283 yards.
Toledo quarterback Tarvares Bolden led the Rockets by completing 16 of 26 passes for 227 yards including an 80-yard touchdown pass to receiver Carl Ford to open the scoring. Toledo added two field goals in the first half to lead 13-0 at intermission. Temple missed a few first half opportunities to score when it failed to score despite having a first and goal at the three-yard line and missed two field goals in the first half as both kicks bounced off the uprights.
In the second half the struggle continued for the Owls, as Toledo extended its lead to 26-0 with a pair of touchdowns. Temple did manage to score in the fourth quarter when freshman quarterback Mike McGann, in his first collegiate appearance, threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior Greg Muckerson with 8:17 remaining.
Junior wide receiver Sean Dillard, one of few bright spots on offense for Temple, caught 5 passes for 113 yards. Defensively, senior linebacker Taylor Suman and senior owlback Chonn Lacey both posted double-digit tackle totals.
Next up for the Owls, another home game at Franklin Field, versus the University of Connecticut on Saturday, September 15 at noon.
