OWLS REPEAT CHAMPIONS OF ANNUAL CAROL WEIL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

The Temple University softball team repeated as champions of the annual Carole Weil Softball Tournament in Allentown, PA on September 29th. They defeated runner-up Lehigh University by a score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to claim the title.

Temple opened the tournament on Saturday, September 28th with three games. The Owls defeated Lafayette University by a score of 10-1, and closed the day with a 6-1 win against Kutztown. Their only loss of the tournament came on Saturday, when the Owls were edged, 2-1, by Atlantic 10 rival Fordham University.

On September 29th, Temple faced cross-town rival Villanova at 9 a.m. The Owls trailed the Wildcats, but rallied in the top of the seventh to pull off the come from behind win, advancing them into the semifinals of the tournament. In the semifinal round Temple played St. Peter's College in a well-pitched contest for both sides, defeating the Peahens 2-1. The win moved Temple into the championship game.

Temple, under the direction of Head Coach Rocci Pignoli, closed the tournament with another defensive display against Lehigh University. The Owls needed only two runs to upend the Mountain Hawks and secure the 2-0 shutout, and the tournament title for the second straight year.

The Owls close out their fall season this weekend, October 5th-6th, at the City Five Tournament in Marcus Hook, PA. Their opening game will be Saturday morning at 11 a.m. against Drexel University.
