OWLS HOPING TO MAKE ORANGEMEN SEE RED SATURDAY AT VETERANS STADIUM

10.7.02 | Football

Temple (1-4, 0-1), under the direction of fifth-year head coach Bobby Wallace, and Syracuse (1-4, 0-1), under the leadership of 12th-year head coach Paul Paqualoni, meet Saturday in a 12:05 p.m. kickoff at Veterans Stadium in the Cherry & White's annual homecoming game. It will mark the Owls' first contest of the season in their primary residence. Temple has played four home games thus far at Franklin Field, its secondary home field, posting a 1-3 record in those contests. Both the Owls and Orangemen will be seeking a return to the win column and their first victory over a Division I-A opponent. Temple has lost four consecutive games since a season-opening, 34-7, victory over I-AA Richmond on Aug. 29. Syracuse has dropped two straight, having last defeated I-AA Rhode Island, 63-17, at home on Sept. 14. Syracuse's 1-4 start is its worst since 1986, when the team had its last losing season, posting a 5-6 record.

Temple is coming off its only bye week of the season. The Owls last played on Sept. 28 versus Conference USA member Cincinnati. UC quarterback Gino Guidugli threw two, fourth-quarter TD passes to propel the visitors to a 35-22 win before 18,336 fans at Franklin Field. After trailing 14-0, Temple rallied with two touchdowns in the third stanza and entered the fourth quarter with a 22-21 advantage. It marked the first time in 14 quarters of play that the Owls held a lead. The Temple defense, however, could not contain Guidugli, who threw for 312 yards and three scores on the day, despite the best efforts of senior defensive lineman Dan Klecko, who fought off double-teams to make seven tackles (six solo) two TFLs, one sack and two QBHs. Senior running back Tanardo Sharps rushed 21 times for 103 yards and a touchdown, his 12th career 100-yard effort.

Syracuse suffered a 48-24 loss to Pittsburgh this past Saturday before 39,947 fans at the Carrier Dome, breaking a streak of 11 straight victories over the Panthers. After SU opened the game with a 28-yard field goal, Pitt scored 48 unanswered points to take a 48-3 lead late in the third quarter. Syracuse starting quarterback R.J. Anderson sprained his right throwing shoulder in the second quarter and did not return after halftime. Troy Nunes completed 11 of 19 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown in his absence. Junior wide receiver Johnnie Morant sat out his third consecutive game for a violation of team rules. He is expected back in uniform for this Saturday's game.
