11.23.02 | Women's Basketball
First year sophomore Khadija Bowens led Temple in scoring with 22 points and added 12 rebounds in 36 minutes of playing time. Freshman center Candice Dupree was equally impressive in her collegiate debut as she tallied 15 points, and game highs of 17 rebounds and six blocked shots. Senior point guard Stacey Smalls scored all of her 15 points in the second half while dishing out six assists and committing only a single turnover.
"This is the kind of year it's going to be, where you never know where you are going to get points from," said Temple head coach Dawn Staley. "Candace Dupree is by far the most skilled athlete I've seen in a long time," Staley continued. "She is very calm and composed for her youth and she's only going to get better. I look forward to spending the next four years with her."
Jewel Clark led the Quakers with a game-high 33 points and was Penn's only double-digit rebounder with 12 boards. Katie Kilker added 17 points and eight rebounds.
As a team, Temple had 14 turnovers but forced Penn into 21 turnovers. The Owls led by as many as 18 points and dominated the specialty stats battles including points in the paint (22-16), points off turnovers (18-7), second chance points (6-2) and fast break points (4-2).
Up next for Temple, the home opener against the Santa Clara Broncos on Sunday, November 24. The game is part of a women's-men's doubleheader at the Liacouras Center. Tip-off is 1:00 p.m. followed by the men's season opener against Rutgers at 3:30 p.m.
