TEMPLE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS SANTA CLARA IN HOME OPENER
11.24.02 | Women's Basketball
Several newcomers made impressive home debuts to pilot the Owls' second victory in three days. Junior college transfer Tynecia Pam paced Temple with 14 points and six rebounds, all of which came before halftime. Freshman Candice Dupree scored 12 points and tied for a game-high with five steals. Khadija Bowens, a first-year sophomore, dished out a game-high eight assists and had a solid defensive outing with five steals. Veterans Ari Moore and Toni Belafonte added 11 points a piece.
Forward Tammy Annas led Santa Clara with a game-high 18 points. Kendra Rhea was the Broncos' only other double-digit scorer with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
Despite a dismal 8-of-36 shooting effort in the first half, including 10 straight misses during a six-minute stretch, the Owls went into halftime losing by only one. The Temple defense compiled eight steals and forced 14 turnovers to hold Santa Clara to 26 points at the half. In all, the Owls caused 27 turnovers on 16 steals.
Temple returns to action Tuesday, November 26, as they host BIG EAST foe Seton Hall at the Liacouras Center. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
