OWLS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO NO. 2 KANSAS STATE

11.29.02 | Women's Basketball

Palo Alto, Calif. - The Temple women's basketball team (3-1, 0-0 A-10) had a tall order in facing second-ranked Kansas State (5-0, 0-0 Big 12) and in the end size mattered as 6-4 center Nicole Ohlde dominated inside helping the Wildcats edge the Owls 72-65 on November 29 at the Stanford Tournament.

Senior All-America candidate Stacey Smalls led the Owls in scoring with 22 points. Smalls also had five assists, four rebounds and a steal in 40 minutes. Sophomore forward Ari Moore (10 points, seven rebounds) was the only other Temple player to score in double figures. Fellow sophomore guard Cynthia Jordan came off the bench to score a career-high nine points, while freshman center Candice Dupree added seven points and four rebounds. Sophomore Khadija Bowens also had seven points and nabbed a game-high four steals.

Ohlde led Kansas State with game-highs of 28 points and 15 rebounds. Kendra Wecker (16) and Megan Mahoney (13) were the other double figure scorers for the Wildcats.

For the first time this season, Temple was out-rebounded (44-27) leading to too many opportunites for the No. 2 Wildcats. Yet the Owls led for much of the game as the Wildcats were pressured into 18 turnovers including 14 Temple steals.

The Owls will now face the loser of No. 7 Stanford vs. Princeton on November 30 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.
