TEMPLE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT AT NOTRE DAME

12.14.02 | Women's Basketball

South Bend, Ind. -- Irish eyes certainly weren't smiling on the Temple women's basketball team (4-4, 0-0 A-10) as it lost to No. 8 Notre Dame (5-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) 84-61 on December 14. The Owls have now lost three consecutive games, all to BIG EAST teams, two of which are nationally ranked.

Sophomore Khadija Bowens led Temple with a game-high tying 17 points. Senior point guard Stacey Smalls (14 points) was the only other Owl to score in double figures. Freshman center Candice Dupree led Temple in rebounding with a game-high tying nine boards while Smalls had a game-high five assists and a team-high three steals.

Alicia Ratay led Notre Dame with 17 points. Courtney LaVere (16 points), Jaacqueline Batteast (14 points), Kelsey Wicks (12 points) and Katy Flecky (11 points) also scored in double figures for the Fighting Irish.

The word for the day was uncharacteristic as the Owls were outdone in nearly every statistical category. Temple lost the rebounding (ND 44- TU34) and turnover (ND 13 -- TU 24) battles. Notre Dame also had 10 more steals (17) than the Owls (7) and the Irish feasted at the free throw line making 14 more shots from the charity stripe than Temple attempted (ND 25-32, TU 7-11).

The Owls will face another BIG EAST opponent in their next outing on Saturday December 21 at Villanova. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
