OWLS WOMEN GRAB SOLE POSSESSION OF FIRST PLACE IN A-10 EAST WITH WIN OVER HAWKS

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team (13-8, 8-2) took over sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference's Eastern Division with a 77-65 win over Saint Joseph's (16-5, 7-3) on February 5. The win also guarantees the Owls at least a share of this season's Philadelphia Big 5 title. Temple placed four players in double figures, won the steals battle 9-3 and forced 20 Hawks turnovers while committing only 10. Temple also outrebounded its opponent for the second straight game. The Owls held a slim 36-35 halftime advantage and steadily increased its the lead in the second stanza to the final double-digit margin.

"It was a huge win," said Temple coach Dawn Staley. "We took their hits and were able to take control of the game for forty minutes," she added.

Senior forward Athena Christoforakis led the Owls with a game-high 21 points. Christoforakis also added nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Natalia Isaac (20 points, three steals), Stacey Smalls (13 points, six assists) and Toni Belafonte (a career high 10) were the other double figure scorers for Temple. Lisa Jakubowicz added seven points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the home team.

Susan Moran led Saint Joseph's with 17 points. Stefanie Graff (13 points, 10 rebounds) Amra Mehmedic (13) and Jane Meade (10) were the other double figure scorers for the Hawks.

Next up for Temple, a road trip to Ohio where the Owls will face Dayton on Friday, February 8 at 7:00 p.m. and Xavier on Sunday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m.
