DAYTON FLIES PAST TEMPLE WOMEN

2.8.02 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team (13-9, 8-3) lost a tough road game to Dayton (10-12, 7-4) on February 8. The Owls, who held a 37-35 halftime advantage, pushed their lead to as many as 18 points in the second half but an 8-0 run by the Flyers knotted the game at 73 with 4:17 remaining. Down the stretch, Dayton took control on its home court and held on for the win. Temple shot well (28-59, 47.5 percent) from the floor and the three-point arc (9-18, 50 percent) but its normally stifling defensive pressure failed to deliver the knockout blow when the Owls needed it most. Temple lost the steals battle 9-3 and forced 11 Dayton turnovers while committing 13. The Flyers also held the edge in rebounding 39-33.

Junior guard Stacey Smalls led the Owls with a career-high 26 points on 9-13 (69 percent) shooting. Smalls also had four assists, four rebounds and a steal. Natalia Isaac (20) and Athena Christoforakis (16) also scored in double figures for Temple. Christoforakis led the Owls in rebounding with eight boards.

Marnina Sullivan led Dayton with 18 points. Emily Williams (15), Sarah Allen (14), Chrissy Donovan (13), and Shannon McFadden (10) also reached double figures for the Flyers. Kristy Hineline was the game's top rebounder with nine boards.

Next up for Temple, the Ohio road swing continues when the Owls face Xavier on Sunday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m.
