TEMPLE SOFTBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER AT SOUTH FLORIDA
3.12.02 | Softball
In game one, the Owls built a 5-0 lead with a five-run second inning. South Florida pitchers walked in two runs before Katie Spencer belted a three-run triple. The Owls scored again in the fifth inning, when Katie Mennig crossed the plate on a Billie Akauola single.
The Bulls, however, would post a five-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth to earn the victory. Liz Naughton was tagged with the loss.
In game two, the Owls lone run came in the sixth inning. Lynsey Grace scored on a Katie Mennig single to give Temple a 1-0 lead.
The lone run would not hold up, however, as the Bulls scored in the bottom of the sixth before an unearned run in the eighth inning gave them the victory. Bari Lynn Pflueger was tagged with the defeat on two unearned runs.
Katie Spencer went two for four and had four putouts in the loss.
Temple entered the doubleheader after going 1-4 at the Speedline Invitational in Plant City Florida, March 7-9. The Owls defeated Nicholls State, 1-0, but suffered defeats to North Carolina (6-3), Central Michigan (6-3), Florida Atlantic (6-1) and Mississippi State (6-0) in the tournament which featured top programs from across the country.
Temple returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 13, with two more games in Tampa, Fla. The Owls play Northern Illinois at 10 a.m. before squaring off against Quinnipiac at 12 noon.
